Beijing has opened a 24-hour unmanned coffee shop where a humanoid robot prepares customized drinks without a traditional barista. The 7Fresh Coffee outlet at Galaxy SOHO uses self-service technology to let customers select their coffee and sweetness.
The automated system reportedly served 202 cups in one hour on its opening day, preparing drinks in about 20–30 seconds while handling multiple orders simultaneously. Customers simply place an order on a touchscreen and collect their finished drink from an automated pickup compartment.
The café demonstrates how humanoid robots could bring faster, consistent and round-the-clock service to everyday businesses. But as robots enter more service jobs, they also raise questions about how much human interaction customers are willing to give up for automation.
