Oil rises on stimulus hopes and supply problems

The main reason - investor hopes for more stimulus measures by China to boost its slowing economy.

That would increase demand by the world's second largest oil consumer.

Other factors include a recent fall in US crude inventories, supply disruptions from a storm in the Gulf of Mexico, lower North Sea output and Middle East tensions.

It was the weakest in more than three years hit by the effects of the eurozone debt crisis and a sluggish recovery in the United States.

Economists now expect further interest rate cuts and other stimulus measures from the Beijing government to support an economy that has seen growth sliding for the last six quarters.
