of time. The island's residents are hard hit by floods, cyclones, coastal
erosion and water scarcity. Weather extremes due to climate change is on
the rise with sea levels climbing and food and water becoming scarce. The
majority of the island's population depends on natural resources for their
livelihoods with agriculture, forestry and fishing the main job-providers.
For a long time, the impact of climate change on these sectors wasn't
clear. Resilient vegetables and trees could play a role in combating
climate change and helping ease the island's problems. A film by Joachim

The Awá have adapted perfectly to life in the forest. But to survive there, they need a large area of intact rainforest. They're always on the move, depending on what fruit is in season and the movements of their prey. A protected area is supposed to protect their traditional way of life. But in reality the remote forests in northern Brazil are beyond the law. Settlers, loggers and pistoleros are pushing ever deeper into Awá territory, destroying the forest and killing the last members of this hunting and gathering people.
