Taiwan's Ma Ying-jeoh Signals Further Relations with China

After signing a long-awaited investment pact with China, Taiwan's government is signaling further moves to deepen cross-straits relations.

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeoh this week said the two sides should consider setting up reciprocal representative offices. Taiwan currently has one tourism office in Beijing.

The issue was brought up last week during official talks between Taiwanese and mainland representatives, according to Taiwanese media. Ma Ying-jeoh said on Tuesday the issue should be considered, given the level of cross-strait trade. It stands at 160 billion US dollars.

US-based author and economics analyst Gordon Chang says the dependency Ma has on the Mainland may be misplaced.

Since the EU lifted visa restrictions on citizens of Serbia and Macedonia, many have been making their way to EU countries, and an increasing number have been applying for asylum. The EU has called upon Serbia and Macedonia to get the situation under control. Now the two countries are resorting to drastic measures: they want to penalize illegal immigration and abuse of asylum by their citizens. Their border police are to be allowed to confiscate passports and vehicles and impose a ban on entering the EU.

Nothing stops European drivers - neither overfilled service areas, nor high gasoline prices and tolls. That's certainly true on the E15, the European route that runs more than 3600 kilometers from Scotland through England and France, directly to Spain. Traffic on the last segment of the route, from Valencia to Gibraltar, is especially heavy. Millions of Moroccans are on their way to visit their families in northern Africa.

With the Australian parliament poised to pass new laws to process asylum seekers off-shore, the country's courts are left to deal with the legacy of boat arrivals.

More than 300 Indonesian adults are in custody in Australia, facing people smuggling charges.

Many of them allegedly worked as crew on asylum-seeker boat but their lawyers argue they are victims of people smugglers.

And to try to prove it, they're travelling into some of the poorest parts of Indonesia.
