Colombia wealth gap leaves poor short-changed

Published on Aug 25, 2012 by
Colombia is often referred to as one of the oldest democracies in Latin America, yet it had an ongoing armed conflict for more than 50 years. Millions of people were displaced by the violence.

The inequality gap in the country is also one of the worst in the western hemisphere.

The richest one per cent of people own more than half of Colombia's land, while the wealthiest 20 per cent earn almost 30 times more than the poorest 20 per cent.

Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman reports from the capital, Bogota.
