61-year-old Brazilian woman gives birth to twins.
A 61-year-old Brazilian woman, who spent years trying to get pregnant, gave birth to twins on October 22.
Antonia Leticia Asti tried in-vitro fertilization in 2002.
Failing to conceive, she attempted adoption, but was told she was too old.
The new shot at artificial insemination was carried out using embryos from her first attempt, which had been frozen 10 years ago.
The final result was twins—a baby boy and girl, who are reported to be healthy, but are still being monitored in hospital.
Although clearly exhausted and still recovering in hospital, Asti couldn't be more pleased.
[Antonia Leticia Asti, 61-Year-Old Who Birthed Twins]: (female, Portugese)
"I'm the happiest woman in the world."
Her doctor, Orlando de Castro Neto, says Asti was an example to be followed and the personification of perseverance.
[Orlando de Castro Neto, Gynaecologist]: (male, Portugese)
"She did something that most people can't manage. The hardest things in life are the most gratifying."
The new father was also ecstatic, although already thinking about more practical things.
[Jose Cesar Asti]: (male, Portugese)
"I will enjoy the children and work very hard to put food in their mouths."
According to Asti's doctor, the biggest hurdle she had to overcome was society's prejudice towards older mothers.
A Spanish woman had become the world's oldest mother when she gave birth to twins aged 66 in 2009.
