RUSAL cuts capacity on weak demand

That after the Russian group announced a 71.5 percent drop in second-quarter net profit, for a loss of 29.5 million euros.

It was hit by weak prices for aluminium, rising power costs and a big writedown on its investment in the African country of Guinea.

It is now at its lowest level since March 2010, driven down by increasing worries about the future level of exports.

GDP contracted by more than previously estimated in 2010 - by 0.3 percent - more than the 0.1 percent contraction originally reported.

It also grew by just 0.4 percent last year, which was less than the 0.7 percent figures first published.

Last year, Ai was fined nearly 2 million euros for tax evasion, his appeal against the decision was unsuccessful and the activist was detained without explanation for three months during an overall crackdown on dissent in China. Since being released he has been refused permission to travel and though under constant surveillance, he continues to openly criticise the Chinese government on Twitter.
